Ecophysiological differentiation between life stages in filmy ferns (Hymenophyllaceae)

چکیده

Desiccation tolerance was a key trait that allowed plants to colonize land. However, little is known about the transition from desiccation tolerant non-vascular sensitive vascular ones. Filmy ferns (Hymenophyllaceae) represent useful system investigate how water-stress strategies differ between and stages within single organism because they have vascularized sporophytes nonvascular gametophytes are each capable of varying degrees tolerance. To explore this, we surveyed 19 species (22 taxa including varieties) filmy on Moorea (French Polynesia) used chlorophyll fluorescence measure light responses. We conducted phylogenetically informed analyses identify differences in physiology life growth habits. Gametophytes had similar or less (ability recover 2 days at ? 86 MPa) lower photosynthetic optima (maximum electron transport rate photosystem II level 95% rate) than sporophytes. Epiphytes were more terrestrial both stages. Despite their lack greater physiological tolerances, several occurred over wider elevational range conspecific Our results demonstrate fern niche requirements, point importance microhabitat shaping evolution water-use plants.

rbcL data reveal two monophyletic groups of filmy ferns (Filicopsida: Hymenophyllaceae).

The "filmy fern" family, Hymenophyllaceae, is traditionally partitioned into two principal genera, Trichomanes s.l. (sensu lato) and Hymenophyllum s.l., based upon sorus shape characters. This basic split in the family has been widely debated this past century and hence was evaluated here by using rbcL nucleotide sequence data in a phylogenetic study of 26 filmy ferns and nine outgroup taxa. Ou...

Light and desiccation responses of some Hymenophyllaceae (filmy ferns) from Trinidad, Venezuela and New Zealand: poikilohydry in a light-limited but low evaporation ecological niche.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Hymenophyllaceae (filmy ferns) are typically plants of shady, constantly moist habitats. They attain greatest species diversity and biomass in humid tropical montane forests and temperate hyperoceanic climates. This paper presents ecophysiological data bearing on their worldwide ecological niche space and its limits. METHODS Chlorophyll fluorescence was used to monitor rec...

Reconciling extreme branch length differences: decoupling time and rate through the evolutionary history of filmy ferns.

The rate of molecular evolution is not constant across the Tree of Life. Characterizing rate discrepancies and evaluating the relative roles of time and rate along branches through the past are both critical to a full understanding of evolutionary history. In this study, we explore the interactions of time and rate in filmy ferns (Hymenophyllaceae), a lineage with extreme branch length differen...

The genetic covariance between life cycle stages separated by metamorphosis.

Metamorphosis is common in animals, yet the genetic associations between life cycle stages are poorly understood. Given the radical changes that occur at metamorphosis, selection may differ before and after metamorphosis, and the extent that genetic associations between pre- and post-metamorphic traits constrain evolutionary change is a subject of considerable interest. In some instances, metam...

Parasitic infection in various stages life of cultured Acipenser persicus

The present study was conducted to evaluate the status of the parasite fauna in Acipenser persicus at different development stages, in order to find prevention protocols for parasitic diseases in this valuable species. For this purpose, sampling from each sex breeder, 10 egg samples, 5-day-old larvae (n = 20), 20-day-old larvae (n = 80) and fingerling of A. persicus (n = 60) r...
